Here Are 5 Facts You Should Know About Sunscreen!

1. Broad spectrum sunscreens are best! Using broad spectrum sunscreen protects you from UVA & UVB rays. UVA is the leading cause of premature aging. UVB is the leading cause of sunburns as well as skin cancer. An easy way to remember is UV(Burning) and UV(Aging). While both ultraviolet rays can cause skin cancer with overexposure, broad spectrum sunscreen can help protect you as long as it's being applied and reapplied properly.

2. No sunscreen is waterproof or sweat-proof. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours when outdoors, indoors, and cloudy days. Especially when you are swimming or sweating. If using waterproof sunscreen it is only effective for 40 minutes in water.

3. Spray-on sunscreens are convenient but not effective. According to the current FDA regulations on testing and standardization do not apply to spray-on sunscreens. In order to get an adequate amount when using a spray-on sunscreen, be sure to rub it in after spraying to make sure all exposed skin is covered.

4. Getting a higher SPF does not mean dramatically more protection. If you normally reach for SPF 30 you’re on the right track. When choosing an SPF it is good to know that the SPF ranking is only based on UVB rays. An SPF 15 protects you from 93% of UVB rays, and SPF 30 blocks 97%. After that, the difference in protection is small. SPF 50 blocks 98%, and SPF 100 stops 99% of UVB rays from reaching your skin. Just remember that you are rubbing and sweating that sunscreen off, so remember to reapply at least every 2 hours.

5. Wear SPF all year round. Some think that SPF is just for the summer when the weather is hot, while that is not wrong, the sun is out everyday exposing us to its ultraviolet radiation. SPF is an easy way to protect yourself year round when there are different levels of SPF. In the spring and summer, I would suggest SPF 30 for daily use, 50-75 if you're kicking it at the beach. Once fall and winter come you're safe with SPF 15-30. Those cloudy days aren't helping you out by hiding the rays from your skin so be sure to wear sunscreen on all exposed skin all year round.
